We all have that one friend we follow on social media that posts incredible images either surfing at Bondi Beach or taking selfies with adorable quokkas. It might make you wonder how they’re they doing it. Are they a secret millionaire? Maybe, but chances are they’re on a working holiday in Australia.
Australia is one of the most popular countries in the world to work while you travel, and with great weather, friendly people and a generous minimum wage, it’s easy to see why.
We’ve put together a guide of things you need to know so you can start travelling in Oz and get paid whilst you do it!
What kind of visa do you need to work in Australia?
For Australia, you’ll need to obtain a Working Holiday Visa. This gives people between the ages of 18 and 30 the opportunity to work whilst you travel for up to 12 months. Starting July 1, 2023 this will be extended to individuals between the ages of 18 and 35, and starting July 1, 2024 it will be expanded to include travel for up to 3 years.
Getting a Working Holiday Visa in Australia means you can explore the incredible golden beaches and chilled out vibes of this amazing country while developing professional skills for your CV, making you more employable when you return from your travels!
Top tip: You have to apply for your working holiday visa before you leave your home country. If it’s not granted before you arrive in Australia, you won’t be able to work.
When should you move to Australia?
The short answer is anytime! There’s no bad time to move Down Under, but remember, as with most countries, it may be more difficult to find a job between December and mid-January as recruitment opportunities slow down around Christmas. On the plus side, these are peak summer months in Australia and a great time to go travelling before you start work!
What jobs can you get?
It depends what you want! You might want to enhance your CV to further your career, or, you might simply want to earn enough pocket money to fund your trip (and beer!).
Whatever you’re looking for, you should be able to find some great opportunities in hospitality, retail and office work.

What are the hours going to be like?
