When planning a trip to the United States of America, all the different options of where to visit can be overwhelming and you can end up feeling a bit daunted. This might lead to you just booking a flight to a classic destination, like New York City or Los Angeles, and while these places are great, some of the greatest treasures in the country are a little less known. Check out the seven spots featured below for inspiration on finding somewhere a bit different.

1. Montauk, New York

Montauk is a bustling beach town on the east end of Long Island (that odd piece of land near NYC). You may have heard of the Hamptons, where many celebrities go on holiday. Well, if you just keep going a little past these affluent communities, you will find yourself in Montauk. This town, originally a small fishing community, has become a popular destination for surfers, families, party animals, campers, and beach lovers. With a charming town, bonfires on moonlit beaches and an energetic nightlife, this sun-soaked holiday will be sure to be memorable.

2. Boston, Massachusetts

In Boston, you will find a pleasant combination of US history and a modern city. If you’re interested in US history there are plenty of walking tours, one of the most popular being the Freedom Trail. In Boston, unlike New York or Chicago, you won’t find a hectic energy. You will have a chance to relax and enjoy things like Newbury Street, Quincy Market, and the Boston Public Gardens. Take a day to experience American baseball and see the Red Sox play at Fenway Park. If dates for your travel are flexible, go in October. The leaves will be changing to beautiful colours of yellow and red and you will be able to experience New England in its full glory.

3. The Florida Keys, Florida

The Florida Keys are a little treasure of tropical islands stretching out into the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Here you can find amazing fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, wildlife, beaches, food, and nightlife. Check out Bahia Honda State Park and you’ll swear you’re on a Caribbean island. Go down to Key West and rent a moped or bike to explore the historic and lively town. The town definitely has its quirks, and I suggest embracing them, as they are a part of the charm. In the Keys you definitely don’t need an excuse to sip on margaritas all day and get some bad tan lines.

4. Nashville, Tennessee

This city, known for its country music, southern comfort food, and rich history will also surprise you with its trendy cafes and shops. With multiple country music acts a week, the Grand Ole Opry is a must see. This city is also home to the Country Music Hall of Fame. To experience Nashville food, and American Southern cuisine to its full extent, a food tour is a way to go. Be sure to go to Honky Tonk bar or a Saloon to sing some karaoke and ride a mechanical bull.

5. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, a port city on the coast of South Carolina facing the Atlantic, is a popular destination for American east coasters looking for a getaway. It also the perfect destination for a European travelling to the US.  Known for its cobblestone streets, pastel coloured homes, and beautiful waters, the city is charming to say the least. If a trip to the US southeast seems interesting, spend a few days in Charleston and then check out some other popular southern cities like Savannah and Atlanta.

6. Lake George, New York

When you think of a mountain or lake holiday your mind might go to Switzerland or northern Italy. However, for many Americans, they think of the lakes in the Adirondack mountains. Two of the most popular being Lake George and Lake Placid. In the summer, you will enjoy water sports, boating, camping, quaint towns, and adrenaline pumping activities. In the fall there will be mountains full of brilliant colours, apple-picking, and more. In the winter months, you can enjoy your time skiing during the day and sit by the campfire at night staring at crystal clear constellations. The most popular times at these lakes are July and August. If you plan far enough in advance, you may be able to experience the peak of an American summer, the fourth of July.

7. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

For nature and animal lovers, Yellowstone National Park is a must visit. This park is mostly located in Wyoming but can also be accessed through Montana. Here you will see erupting geysers, including the world famous, Old Faithful. Additionally, there are canyons, rivers, lakes, and colourful hot springs. Some of the animals that call this park their home include bison, bear, elk, moose, and mountain lions. Due to the huge size of the park, being close to 9,000 km², you can easily spend a week here and see something completely different every day. It is very convenient to find lodging inside the park, however, a fun alternative is to stay at a ranch outside of the park.
